"The State of Healthcare & Medical Technology in 2020"

Carnegie Institution

The BIO IT Coalition's 6th annual conference will present the challenges of the post genomic era and will engender a discussion to guide scientists, technologists, business people, lawyers, regulatory and policy experts, economic development specialists, educators and others in attendance towards creating the future of healthcare and medical technology.  The genomic revolution has given us many opportunities for change. Which ones have been met and which still remain?

  • Will we be able to predict and prevent diseases such as cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer's and more?
  • How will economic regions grow as technologies and science create new medical products and ways to manage patient information?
  • How will scientists and others from complementary fields communicate to create new ways of treating and managing diseases?
  • How will physicians work with patients in the future?
  • How will new medical breakthroughs be funded and developed?
  • How will the regulatory realities change to accommodate the burgeoning number of new medical products?
  • How will we create a strong, well-educated workforce to support the bio/medical IT industry of the future?

We will examine what has happened so far in the information/bioscience revolution since the Human Genome Project was completed and, more importantly, how to manage the vast information which resulted and how to diagnose, predict and prevent disease in the future.  We also wish to set goals for what the medical and healthcare technology landscape will be like in the year 2020.  Further, we will discuss how science will interact with business, the law and ethical standards to bring about these promises.
