DR. LEROY HOOD WILL ADDRESS "SYSTEMS MEDICINE; THE EMERGENCE OF PERSONALIZED, PREDICTIVE, PREVENTIVE AND PARTICIPATORY (P4) MEDICINE" AT THE 8TH ANNUAL BIO IT COALITION CONFERENCE

The keynote address for the BIO IT Coalition's 8th Annual Conference will be presented by Leroy Hood, M.D., Ph.D., President of the Institute for Systems Biology, and recognized as one of the world's leading scientists in molecular biotechnology and genomics.  Dr. Hood, a founding member of Amgen, holds numerous patents and awards for scientific breakthroughs and has shown a life-long commitment to making science accessible and understandable to the general public, especially children.  One of his foremost goals is to bring hands-on, inquiry-based science to K-12 classrooms.  The Conference, entitled, Will Biotechnology/IT Save the World? The Revolutionary P4 Medicine Approach, will take place on April 22, 2009 at the Carnegie Institution in Washington, DC.  Dr. Hood will also join a panel, The Implications of Systems Biology: A Cultural Shift, along with other highly qualified speakers from academia, industry and government.

"In our 2009 conference, we will examine the promise of the genomics revolution and the challenges for medical technology development and healthcare in the coming decades," said Bob Murphy, Co-Chairman of the BIO IT Coalition and a partner of Pepper Hamilton LLP.  "P4 Medicine is the next step in the effort to bring the value of the human genome to all of us and Dr. Hood is the perfect guide to lead us into this complex world, as we examine the impact of systems biology and systems medicine on the future of human health and the business of life sciences," added Chris Royse, Co-Chairman of the BIO IT Coalition and Director of International Security Operations for the Tauri Group. The 2008 meeting agenda will include discussions about the future of health care, funding and policy issues, the role of education in maintaining American leadership in science and technology, ethics, medical communications and much more.

The conference will feature a breakfast, a scholarship awards luncheon, and conclude with a cocktail hour, with science and arts based entertainment.  Attendees will have many opportunities to meet and network with high level speakers and guests.

The BIO IT Coalition bridges the life sciences and information technology industries to promote the faster development and delivery of new therapies and diagnostics and better patient care, through monthly and annual interactive, content driven programs featuring expert speakers in bioscience, technology, business and academia which highlight innovation, investment, education, collaboration and partnership.  For information about the Coalition and its programs and more, visit www.bioitcoalition.org.
