NEW AND RETURNING SPONSORS HELP BRING AN EXCITING PROGRAM TO THE CARNEGIE INSTITUTION

On April 23, 2008, a select group of generous sponsors will join the BIO IT Coalition to provide an outstanding program.  "The State of Healthcare and Medical Technology in 2028" will facilitate a dialogue among people in science, technology, the law, academia, funding sources, pharmaceutical, biotech and other businesses and those in complementary fields, about the future of the bio/IT industry and how it will improve healthcare.  "Maryland Technology Economic Development Corporation (TEDCO) is happy to become a first time sponsor of an organization dedicated to the technologies which will improve healthcare," said Renee Winsky of TEDCO.

Dr. Francis Collins, the Director of the Human Genome Research Institute at NIH will present the keynote speech, "Genomic Medicine".  Two panel discussions will take place at the Conference.  The first, Changing Biotech about the future of the biotech industry will be broadcast on moderator David Ewing Duncan's NPR radio show, BioTech Nation.  The second, New Paradigms For The Pharmaceutical Industry will be about changes that must occur in the pharmaceutical industry.  In addition, a unique program showing the connection between the arts and science, Ferocious Beauty: Genome will be presented.  Five $1,000. scholarships will be awarded to deserving students in relevant fields. "The Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development is pleased to be among the sponsors of this year's event, which will explore in depth the many issues impacting Maryland's growing biotechnology industry," said David Edgerley, Secretary of the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development (DBED).  "It is critical that we have events like this so that we can work together to move this industry forward."

The Coalition is pleased to announce and thank its new and returning sponsors and supporters for their invaluable support.  Returning sponsors are American Medical Records Network, Arlington Economic Development, the BIO Medical Engineering Program of the Volgenau School of IT and Engineering at George Mason University and Pepper Hamilton LLP.  These organizations have sponsored all of the Coalitions past annual events. New sponsors include Maryland DBED, Maryland TEDCO, Theranostics Health, University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute (UMBI) and Virginia's Center for Innovative Technology (CIT).  Other supporters include: Tatari Construction, and Prince William County Office of Economic Development.

Dr. Jennie Hunter-Cevera, President of UMBI, said of its sponsorship of Ferocious Beauty: Genome, "It's exciting to use the arts to express how science works in education.  We also use the arts to help us think creatively at all levels of knowledge.  The arts help us look at processes in new ways - and to find new solutions."

This industry is dynamic," said Robert Murphy, an attorney with Pepper Hamilton LLP, and the new Chairman of the Coalition, replacing the retiring Steve A. Mandell.  "Pepper Hamilton has supported the Coalition since it started and we are pleased to be able to continue to bring high quality content and networking opportunities to the people who are in the business of improving healthcare."
